Understanding Roulette Odds

I really can't find an appropriete article for "TXT Contests" Today
but this might do... read on...

Understanding Roulette Odds
by Jake Gregory

Taking the time to educate yourself on the different roulette betting strategies can greatly improve your chances of winning. Most people believe that if you bet on red or black, you have a 50-50 chance of winning. There are 18 red spaces on a roulette table with 38 total spaces. Simply dividing 18 by 38 tells us that the probability of landing in a red space is about 47.37 percent. Logic tells us that if you spun the wheel 38 times then the odds are that the wheel will hit the red at least 10 times. When you figure in percentages it is believed that out of 38 spins if you hit red 50 percent of the time, then 18 will be red. So the break point would be an average of 19 times.

Of course, the same logic would apply to betting on black. However, when you are betting on the Roulette Wheel you don't have to bet either red or black to have a 50-50 chance at winning. You also have the option for betting either odds or evens, and highs or lows. Many players also like to bet multiple times. This type of betting works with a combination of red/black betting and the Martingale system. For example, a player can bet by placing his chips on a red and an odd square or a black square with an even number will work as well. Each bet on a separate square is treated like a separate bet. When one of the bets loses, the player then doubles the bet and when a bet wins the player's bet remains the same.

It doesn't seem like you could last very long by betting like that but the reason it works so well is that there is a 25 percent chance of winning both the red and odd number and there is a 50 percent chance of breaking even when one bet wins and one loses. But in reality, the player would need a lot of money to continue playing this way. Sooner or later, you would have to walk away before you start to lose or run out of money. The key is knowing when to say when.

Many people also prefer to make column bets. Column bets are a type of outside bet and are located at the bottom of the table, below the individual numbers. There are three separate column bets available and each bet corresponds to the entire column of numbers above. Column bets pay 2:1, usually the column bet boxes have the words "2 to 1" written in their betting area. If you placed a $10 column bet on the first column of numbers and any of those numbers hit, you would be paid $20.

There is also something called using the dozen bet. Dozen bets are a type of outside bet that are very similar to column bets. With this wager, you are allowed to place a bet on either the first dozen (1-12), the second dozen (13-24), or the third dozen (25-36) numbers. To place a dozen bet you simply place your chips on the dozen betting area you wish to bet on. If any number in that dozen hits, you win. Dozen bets are usually labeled on the roulette table with the words "1st 12", "2nd 12", and "3rd 12". These bets have a payout of 2:1. If you placed a $10 dozen bet on the 1st 12 and the wheel landed on 7, you would be paid $20.

How you bet is your decision to make, but no matter how you decide to bet, don't ever discuss it with anyone. There are some people who will think you have a sure thing going and will try to copy you. You don't want them blaming you if things don't go their way! Roulette is fun and exciting, but it is also a game of ups and downs. But as long as you understand how to play and how to use the many different bets to your advantage, you should be able to put the odds slightly more in your favor.

Benefits of Entering Contests

Benefits of Entering Contests
by Vivian Gilbert Zabel

By the end of January, 2007, fifteen (15) large manila envelopes carried contest entries to the OWFI writing contest. Each year, the Oklahoma Writers' Federation Inc. holds a conference the first part of May, and each year the organization sponsors a huge contest of 33 categories, open to people all over the world. I entered 15 of the categories.

The good news announced at the Saturday night awards banquet sent me scrambling to my feet, even if the legs and feet didn't cooperate very well. I took first place in the Young Adult Short Story. I'm going to frame the certificate and copy of the prize check. After all, taking first place from about 80 entries with a perfect score isn't an every day occurrence, at least for me.

The other good news, and very helpful part of the contest, is I received oodles of helpful suggestions and comments on all but two entries. (Those two entries had nothing: good, bad, helpful, or indifferent.) Of course I'm going to put the score sheet and copy of my winning entry in plastic sheets for gloating purposes: a perfect score and very nice, encouraging comments. All the revisions, all the editing, all the plain hard work on "Survival at Waterloo" paid off.

The best part of the contest, other than winning, consists of pages and pages of suggestions, edits, and comments on twelve of the other entries. I'm already revising one novel I entered and plan on revising all the other works. The judges encouraged me, let me know what they liked and found effective in my writing as well as what needed improvement. I won more than a first prize: I won invaluable critiques on items I plan on submitting -- after I make all the revisions necessary to strengthen and improve.

I encourage everyone who wants to be a writer, a successful writer, to enter stories, novels, poetry, articles in contests. Test your writing, find out where more work is needed as well as what works.

Where to Find Writing Contests

Writing magazines such as The Writer, Writer's Digest, and Poets and Writers list contests in their magazines. The magazine itself often sponsors contests. Find copies of the magazines or look on line.

If you're a high school student, talk to English and/or creative writing teachers. Different organizations sponsor student writing contests each year and notify teachers.

If you're a college student, check with the English or Creative Studies department for writing contests held on campus.

Check on contests on writing sites. Perhaps the comments aren't by professional editors, agents, writers, or publishers (as found at the OWFI contest or magazine contests), but most give helpful suggestions to improve writing.

Don't be afraid to find out how to improve your writing.
